The NanoPi R5S is the successor of the NanoPi R4S. It is powered by the Rockchip RK3568B2 SoC with 4 cores and the clock can go up to 2GHz. The R5S has 2 models with 2GB and 4GB of LPDDR4x RAM. Regardless of the model, you will have 8GB onboard eMMC storage to install the OS. What makes this router stand out is the 2 x 2.5G network ports (PCIe) and the M.2 NVME slot. While the R4S which can only be used in headless mode, the R5S is now having a HDMI port for video output. Besides, you will have two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports to connect external devices. The USB type C port had been upgraded to supports PD, 5V/9V/12V input. The router is shipped with FriendlyWRT pre-installed. It is running OpenWRT version 22.03 RC2 and having kernel version 5.10.66 As I tested, Software Offloading had been enabled by default and it is causing problems with throughput & SQM. You may need to take a look at it or maybe update the firmware to a newer version and see if the problem is fixed. In this video, I am going to check out the NanoPi R5S's performance with FriendlyWRT (a folk of OpenWRT). The WAN port (eth0) of the R5S is only 1Gbps; therefore, I have configured the LAN1 as a WAN port, in order to do the test with all 2.5G Ethernet. Before running the test, the NanoPi R5S's firmware was updated to the newest version, which was uploaded on August 3, 2022. The test consits of WAN to LAN, OpenVPN and Wireguard VPN throughput tests. The NanoPi R6S is powered by the Rockchip RK3588S. It is a dual-cluster core system with Quad-core ARM Cortex-A76 and Quad-core Cortex-A55 CPU. It comes with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM (64-bit, 2133MHz) and 32GB of eMMC. On the network connection, the R6S is similar to the R5S. It has a native Gigabit Ethernert port (RTL8211F-CG) and 2 2.5GbE PCIe Ethernet ports (RTL8125BG). With the powerful NPU (up to 6 TOPS) and GPU (8K video encoding & decoding), the NanoPi R6S can be used for different applications. Besides FriendlyWrt 22.03 (a fork of OpenWRT), the R6S also runs Android TV 12 and Debian 10. Support for Ubuntu desktop is also coming soon. The network ports of the NanoPi R6S are not working when testing with the pre-installed FriendlyWrt firmware, that is why I have to to update the firmware to the latest release. In this video, I will show you how to install/update the FriendlyWrt into the eMMC storage with a microSD. In this video, let's check out the SQM QoS performance of the NanoPi R6S with FriendlyWrt (a fork of OpenWRT). For the test, I have setup a small network lab with 3 torrent seeding machines on the WAN side to simulate the ingress traffic. I also tested it with OpenSpeedTest and iperf3 with parallel streams. With Cake, Piece_of_Cake and Ethernet Overhead 44, the NanoPi R6S gives a stable ping response time at 1500 Mbps (1.5Gbps / 1500000 kbit/s). The optimal value I found is 2000 Mbps Download (ingress) & 1500 Mbps Upload (egress).
