It's super flexible, again, with panels you can move around to suit your workflow, it has tons of brushes, and you can further extend that by downloading new ones. Inkscape For vector graphics, the go-to open source app is Inkscape. Whether you want to mockup an application or a website, or design an icon, or just draw something, Inkscape can do it all! Blender For 3D modelling, your probably already know about Blender. One might argue it's THE best tool for the job, used by animators, VFX artists and modelers all around the world. Darktable Darktable lets you edit your photos non destructively, and your original images are preserved. VLC For video playback, you can't find something as versatile as VLC. It's not the prettiest, but it will play virtually anything, even badly damaged files, that it can even repair. Audacity Another example of an app that doesn't look good at all, but that lets you do a TON of stuff. It's a powerful audio recording and editing station. It can digitize anything, import and export virtually any format, and even combine audio files. LibreOffice LibreOffice: if you've ever used OpenOffice, forget all about it, because LibreOffice is where it's at. It's faster, it looks better, it's more stable, and it's extremely customizable to let you work with either a toolbar and menubar, or with a more modern ribbon. OnlyOffice Another solution is OnlyOffice. Its compatibility is better than LibreOffice, and I've been using it for a year or so, now, trading files back and forth with people using MS Office, without any issues whatsoever. Kdenlive For video editing, Kdenlive will probably be your go-to. It's a wonderful non linear video editor, with very powerful features to organize your media, edit your project, and render it in a format of your choosing. Handbrake For converting video into other formats, handbrake is what you need. It can rip DVDs into a single file, convert any format to any other, using any codec you might want for audio, and for video, and any container format you prefer.

Let's begin with the GNU General Public License. The original GPL was created by Richard Stallman in 1989. It's what we call a copyleft license: all modifications made have to be redistributed under the same terms. The GPL generally gives you the right to download and use, modify, and redistribute the code using the license, without any restrictions. A lot of projects use the GPL, like the Linux kernel, most GNU software, Wordpress, Notepad, or Git. Also, any project under the GPL can be sold, by the original creator, or anyone else, whether they modified the code or not, but the person who bought that software has every right to redistribute the code for free themselves. Another much used license is the MIT license, with about 31% of FOSS projects using it in 2021. It's been created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT, and it's also a free software license, that grants you the rights to copy, modify, merge, or distribute the code. It's a very permissive license, much more flexible than the GPL, as it doesn't restrict what you can do with the code you're using, there is no copyleft or copyright included, so you can include code licensed under the MIT license in your proprietary software, and not redistribute your changes The MIT license is used in some form or another by a LOT of projects, like the X11 display server, .Net Core, Angular, React, Node.js or jQuery. On to the Apache license, also used a lot, by 14% of FOSS projects in 2021. The Apache license is some form of middle ground between the GPL and the MIT license. It grants you all the free software freedoms of downloading, using, modifying, distributing, and selling software using the license, whether it's for personal, internal or commercial use. The Apache license isn't a copyleft license like the GPL, which means your modifications don't have to use the Apache License, BUT the original work must still be published under the Apache license, and every modification has to be labeled clearly. The Apache license is used by Android, the Apache HTTP server, Kubernetes, or the Open 3D Engine. Then we have the BSD License. It was created by the Berkeley Source Distribution project, known as BSD, originally in 1969. There are multiple variants, but most grant the same freedoms to download, use, modify, redistribute the software, as long as the copyright notice and license are included. The BSD license doesn't force any modification to be distributed under the terms of the BSD license. But licences don't only apply to code. You can also license your creative work, like a book, a video, a drawing, any form of photo, or art, basically anything you create can be covered by a license. And one of the most well known and used is the Creative Commons. There are 6 types of that license: First, you have the basic "Attribution". Then you have the Share Alike license, the Non derivative license, the Non Commercial license, the Non commercial Share Alike, and the, share alike, non derivative license.

The Problem With Open Source

Open source software is a cornerstone of our industry, but there are risks associated with using it. One of the most well known is Lineage OS, which builds on top of the Android open source project, or AOSP, supports a LOT of devices, and is open source, of course. Another interesting one if you want to fully escape Google's ecosystem is Graphene OS. The drawback of Graphene OS is that it only supports Google Pixels. Techlore video about Graphene: 🤍 And yet another one that I personally really love is /e/ OS, and despite its terrible name, it is even more de googled than Graphene OS. Android allows alternative app stores, and if you're looking for FOSS apps, your best best is F Droid. 🤍 Let's start with mail clients. And the obvious one here is K9 Mail. It does basically everything you'd expect a mail client to do, with IMAP support, dark mode, unified inbox if you have multiple email accounts, per mail account notifications, email signatures, email encryption with openPGP, push notifications, and it also doesn't track anything you do, write, or send. For web browsers, it's pretty easy. You don't even need F Droid to install open source browsers and replace the default one. Most Android ROMS that manufacturers ship use either Google Chrome, or their own web browser based on CHromium, but they're generally not open source. For launchers, you have Lawnchair. It's basically a copy of the pixel launcher, but you'll have to install it from their website, as the version on F Droid is old, like the one in the play store. 🤍 Another option is O Launcher, if you want a really super minimalistic launcher, with only a few links to most used apps, a daily wallpaper, and a list of apps that only appear by name. You can choose how many apps appear on the homescreen, which apps are opened by a swipe left or right, and that's about it! For taking pictures, you basically have 2 really good options. If you just want to snap quick pictures and videos, and you don't care about the settings, the resolution, the framerate or any of that stuff, then SImpleCamera is for you. If you like tweaking every single setting before taking a picture, though, you need OpenCamera. And, to preview these images, your best option is probably Simple Gallery. It has albums, search, and a bunch of options to include or exclude folders, handle full screen previews, and it lets you star, share, delete, and edit pictures, with a lot of options to rotate, crop, invert, or apply filters, and you can save the modified image as a new one. Also, you might have noticed that these "Simple Apps" look alike, and that's because they're all part of the same collection made by the same dev team: 🤍 As per map applications, your 2 best open source bets are OSMAnd, for OpenStreetMap Automated Navigation Directions, and OSMAnd has travel maps, offline navigation for cars, cycling or walking, and relief maps. It obviously uses open street map. does virtually the exact same thing as OSMAnd, and also uses open street map, but adds travel guides to show you interesting places to see or visit, and I find its interface looks a bit nicer than OSMAnd.

Make Money Selling Open Source Software?

One of the most common questions that I get from programmers and developers who are discovering the free and open source movements is: "Is it possible for me to make money selling open source?" Can a developer actually earn a living if there code has to be open source and publicly available?
