At the age of six, Kanishka Sharma happened to watch the movie, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. He did not know then that this would be the first source of inspiration for what is today, his life's passion. Shifu Kanishka, as he is known today, is the first Indian to have trained at the famed Shaolin Temple Secular Discipline Union in China. He is the first Indian to have brought the deadly combat system of Pekiti Tirsia Kali to India and also the first Indian to introduce Kali Tactical Combat System to the Law Enforcement, Military and Special Forces. Having a background in Martial Arts for more than 25 yrs, in combat systems like Shaolin Wu gong, Kungfu Toa, Muay Chaiya, Muay Thai , Sanshou and Jeet Kune Do-Inosanto Kali, Shifu Kanishka Sharma is highly specialized in Commando Close Quarter Combat which teaches a practitioner to knock out opponent in 3 seconds. He is specialized in Extreme Close-Quarter knife tactics, Weapon Retention and Disengagement tactics, Bayonet tactics and Safety Baton Tactics and Strategy for Law Enforcement Units. Shifu Kanishka Sharma's remarkable journey began when he decided to give up his corporate job in favour of martial arts which was his passion and what his heart yearned for. Granted the title of Shifu (Master), he has been blessed with the Buddhist name 'Shi Yan You', which means 'perfect', in recognition of his skills. Shifu Kanishka is certified Wingchun Practitioner with a highest rank of SIFU granted to him by GM Kwok of Foshan Wingchun and Modied wingchun by Sifu Wang. Eager to impart his knowledge to others, Shifu Kanishka returned to India to set up his own martial arts training camp near Nainital. Following the gurukul system, students must hike up to the school, where they undergo a rigorous training ritual. Shifu Kanishka wants his students to learn martial arts the right way, not the sports version of it that so many teach. His students come to him as much to learn combat as to learn the Shaolin way of life. Pangot. A tiny hamlet in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand in the lower Himalayas has a rather unusual secret. It is home to India’s only Shaolin Gurukul for martial arts. Here, Kanishka Sharma, the first Indian martial arts practitioner to attain the title of Shifu, trains more than a thousand students each year. The legendary Shaolin Temple of China bestowed upon him the title of Shifu. Shifu Kanishka says, "My name is Shifu Kanishka. I am also known as Shi Yan You. I am a 34th generation Shaolin Warrior from Shaolin Temple, China. One of the main reasons for who I am today is because of the Shaw Brothers’ kung fu films like 36 Chambers Of Shaolin, Mad Monkey Kung Fu and Ten Tigers Of Shaolin. I called it Shaolin Gurukul because I really love the concept of that Indian culture of gurukul where people come, you know, a place where the place of the teacher is [like a guru]. I am not just teaching Shaolin Kung Fu. I teach multiple martial arts here. People who want to learn combat and stuff, I teach them my own system, Shifu Kanishka Combatives or Pekiti Tirsia Kali or Jeet-Kune-Do ." After spending years at the Shaolin Temple in the Henan province, the 45-year-old has set up this one-of-a-kind facility spread over acres. It hosts students for short-term residential programs from all over the country. And the master runs a tight ship, replicating his experience in China.
