During this attempt, the Regera averaged around 1.1MW of dissipation during the braking phase, the system dissipated enough energy to power the average American home for just under 2 hrs. On almost every powered wheeled vehicle the brake system produces more deceleration force than the drivetrain’s acceleration force. ORIGINS The first wheeled vehicle brake systems consisted simply of a block of wood and a lever mechanism. To stop a vehicle, the lever was pulled, forcing the block of wood to grind against the steel rim of the wheel. Wooden brakes were commonly used on horse-drawn carriages and would even be used on early steam-powered cars that were effectively steam powered carriages. DRUM BRAKES The first brake system specifically designed for cars with pneumatic tires would be developed from an idea first devised by Gottlieb Daimler. Daimler’s system worked by wrapping a cable around a drum coupled to a car’s wheel. As the cable was tightened, the wheel would be slowed down by friction. While it was far more responsive than a wooden block, the exposed friction material of the external design made it less effective when exposed to the elements. This idea evolved into the drum brake with a fixed plate and two friction shoes. These early systems used a mechanical cam that, when rotated, would apply a force through the web to the lining table and its friction material. On drum brakes, the shoe located towards the front of the vehicle is known as the primary shoe while the rearward one is designated the secondary shoe. MASTER CYLINDER At the drunk brake, a hydraulic cylinder containing two pistons replaces the cam mechanism, applying a force outwards on the brake shoes as pressure builds within the system. In hydraulic brake systems, a combination of rigid hydraulic lines made from either steel or a nickel-copper alloy and flexible reinforced rubber hoses are used to transfer fluid pressure between the master cylinder and the brake cylinders. Hydraulics also increased safety, through redundancy by allowing the brake system to be split into two independent circuits using tandem master cylinders. Four wheel-hydraulic brakes would first appear on a production car with the 1921 Duesenberg Model A though Rickenbacker would be the first manufacturer to offer them on vehicles that were mid-priced and more mass-appealing, in 1922. Shortly thereafter, other manufacturers would adopt hydraulic brakes and it quickly became the industry standard. VACUUM BOOSTER Many of these ideas involved using compressors to pressurize either air or hydraulic fluid and in order reduce the force needed by an operator to actuate a vehicle's brakes. First introduced by the Pierce-Arrow’s motor car company in 1928, this system, originally designed for aviation, uses the vacuum generated by an engine’s air aspiration to build a vacuum within a device known as a brake vacuum servo. By the 1930s, vacuum-assisted drum brakes began to grow in popularity. DISC BRAKES The next leap in braking technology got its start in England in the late 1890s with the development of a disc-type braking system by the Lanchester Motor Company. This system used a cable operated clamping device called a caliper that would grab a thin copper disc that was coupled to the wheel, in order to slow its rotation. By 1955, Citroën would introduce the Citroen DS, the first true mass-production car to field disc brakes. For the vast majority of modern disc-brakes systems, the disc or rotor is made from gray cast iron. ABS These systems attempt to modulate brake pressure to find the optimal amount of braking force the tires can dynamically handle, just as they begin to slip. In most situations, maximum braking force occurs when there is around 10–20% slippage between the braked tire’s rotational speed and its contact surface. By the early 1950’s the first widely used anti-skid braking system, called Maxaret, would be introduced by Dunlop. It would take the integration of electronics into braking to make the concept viable for cars. As the wheel’s rotation starts to accelerate as it transitions out of braking the controller rapidly increases hydraulic pressure to the wheel once again until it sees the deceleration again. COMPOSITES Around the early 2000’s a derivative material known as carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide would start appearing in high end sports cars. Called carbon-ceramic brakes, they carry over most of the properties of carbon-carbon brakes while being both more dense and durable and they possess the key property of being effective even at the lower temperature of road car use. The amount of heat released by an average car during a single braking instance from a speed of 90 km/h is enough to boil two liters of water in just three seconds. All stock systems on all cars today are capable of doing this at least 4-5 times before brake fade starts occurring. This means that you can accelerate from 0 to 90 panic brake to a stop then accelerate to 90 again panic brake again and repeat this cycle at least 4 times before the slightest amount of brake fade can be measured. And even once brake fade starts it will be small and gradual and getting your stock brakes to fade to a point where they can't lock up the wheels and trigger ABS is next to impossible. This means that driving on the street cannot overpower the stock braking system. In fact if you ever need multiple panic brakes in a row while driving on public roads than there's something very wrong with your driving. A lack of braking force does not exist on vehicles. Issue number two is that increasing braking force further cannot reduce your stopping distance. And this is because your tires are the only thing on your car touching the ground...they are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road surface. Once your overpower the grip that your tires provide there is nothing else left to overpower. Once the tire locks up and starts sliding increasing the brake force further will achieve nothing. Increasing the brake force via increased leverage or increased clamping force cannot increase the grip of the tires. Increasing braking force further cannot reduce your stopping distance. And this is because we already have more than enough braking force to lock up the wheels. The comments on my previous video is make it obvious that many people associate brakes primarily with friction and torque....but a much better approach would be to perceive brakes as heat sinks. This is what they do. They convert the motion of the car or kinetic energy into heat and then dissipate this heat into the surrounding air. Now we're going to compare three different cars to illustrate the extent to which modern cars really don't have an issue with braking. The first one is the Mclaren Senna which is an 800 horsepower hypercar with absolutely amazing brakes state of the art carbon brakes. It has 390mm discs and 6 piston fixed calipers in the front. It gets from 0 to 100km/h in 2.6 seconds. The second car is the Mazda MX-5 ND has 280mm disc brakes and single piston floating calipers in the front. The 2.0 liter model gets from 0 – 100 km/h in just under 7 seconds. The third car is my very own 2009 Toyota Aygo has 247mm discs and single piston floating calipers in the front. It gets from 0-100 km/h in 14.2 seconds. So as you can see we have staggering differences in brake systems and acceleration times. But not so much when it comes to braking distances. The Senna manages to come to a stop from a speed of 100kmh in 30 meters. The ND MX-5 manages 33.8 meters. I did a little test with the Aygo and did 10 panic brakes from 100 km/h and I managed an average of 35 meters. So the McLaren Senna has 57% larger brake discs than the Aygo and has six times the number of caliper pistons. It is also 446% faster from 0 to 60 than the Aygo but it is only 16 % faster from 60 to 0. So why is this the case? Why doesn't a million dollar hyper car dramatically outbreak a cheap little city car? The reason is that technology has long since reached the sensible limit of braking force. Getting to a stop from 100 km/h in 35 meters takes less than 3 seconds and this in turn exposes you to forces of nearly 1G. Which is the limit of what the average driver can sustain on their body and still retain full control of their car. Engineers are more than capable of making vehicles with ridiculous stopping distances. For example the F2004 which is Ferrari's formula 1 car from the 2004 season can come to a stop from 100km/h in just 16 meters. That's more than 2Gs of force. Formula 1 drivers are highly trained athletes capable of taking this load easily. On the other hand 2Gs would make many average drivers loose control of their vehicle. In fact F1 cars can generate as high as 5Gs of force when braking hard from high speeds. That's the sort of deceleration that can make some people pass out. In this video, I make Brake Rotors from scratch auto of Lead, Aluminium, and Copper alloy. I chose these metals because they are very different one to each other. It was relatively easy to cast Lead and aluminum. The tricky part was to cast copper because of its height melting point ​(1084.62 °C, ​1984.32 °F). I didn't know what to expect when I tested the brake disc made of copper alloy. I thought it would melt, but it didn't. For the Rotor made from aluminum, I melted cans made from aluminum alloy Al 3004 / Al 5182 and some Grounding wire Al5052. I was not surprised that it is brittle and breaks into pieces subjected to massive forces. Lead is very soft and highly malleable. It made a spectacular show in our video; because of the friction, the Disk started melting, spurting like a stream, and solidified instantly before falling to the ground. Brake the bank: 🤍 Patreon: 🤍 Support d4a: 🤍 Never boil: 🤍 If you have ever considered upgrading your brakes to larger ones and did a bit of research online you have probably found out that, contrary to intuition, bigger brakes won't reduce your braking distance. On the other hand we all know that upgrading to wider tires can improve both your cornering and braking. So the underlying question we're answering today is why does surface area matter with tires but not with brakes. If this is your first time hearing it than you might be surprised to learn that upgrading from stock brakes and calipers to larger brakes and calipers will not reduce your braking distance. This is surprising because intuition tells us that if we increase the surface area of both the brake and caliper than we increase the amount of friction which should improve braking and stop the car faster. But, physics disagrees with intuition and physics says this: F = μN Yes, it's a formula but don't get scared it's the simplest formula there is. And it tells us that F, which is frictional force equals the coefficient of friction which mu or mew different people pronounce it differently, it's a Greek letter times the normal force. So let's explain this a bit. Frictional force is obviously the amount of friction. The higher the frictional force the more friction we need to overcome and the harder it will be to move a certain object. The coefficient of friction is a constant and it depends on the nature of the material and surface roughness. For example sandpaper has a much higher coefficient of friction than glass. Basically the coefficient of friction tells us how friction-y a particular material is. Our normal force is the force acting on the object and pressing it down. In case of a stationary object that force will be the weight of the object pressing it against the surface. As you can see there's no surface area in the formula. Physics doesn't care if the object is on it's side or on it's face. Even if the difference in surface area is extreme the frictional force is the same because the weight of the object is the same and the material is the same no matter how we place the object. Although we increase the number of hills facing each other when we increase the surface area we are also distributing the same force over a larger surface area which means that the hills interlock less, they touch each other less. This is why stabbing yourself with a needle is far more painful than doing the same thing with let's say a bottle. You may apply the exact same force in both scenarios but in the case of the needle all the force is concentrated on an extremely small surface area leading to a much higher pressure. In case of the bottle the force gets distributed over a larger area leading to reduced pressure. The same thing happens with our plank. Friction stays the same because we're offsetting the increased number of peaks with reduced pressure on the peaks since we're distributing the same force over a greater surface area. Ok but then but why do all the fancy sports cars have giant brakes which are obviously so much larger than the brakes on most other cars? The answer is heat or more accurately the prevention of brake overheating. If you observe brakes more closely you will see that almost everything has to do with heat management. For example brakes on cars are tucked in inside the wheels and the body of the car which means that they receive far less airflow than brakes on motorcycles which are sitting directly in the air stream. This is why car brakes are ventilated and motorcycle brakes are not. Ventilation works to try and flush out as much heat out of the brake system as possible. Why is heat such a problem with brakes? Because it leads to brake fade. When brakes overheat a thin layer of gas forms on the surface and this leads to reduced friction and braking performance otherwise known as brake fade. So this formula applies to brakes but it does not apply to tires. Many tests have been done over the years and have proven that wider and larger tires improve braking and cornering performance. The answer is surprisingly obvious. Brakes are solid and rigid.....tires are elastic. They're made from rubber after all. Brakes are not designed to deform or change shape under normal operation. Tires deform and change shape all the time. The loads applied on brake pads and rotors are simple – the brake pad only moves in one direction. These brakes allow the driver to fully control the car's steering when maximal force is applied to the brake pedal. Generally, when the driver suddenly applies brakes to a moving car, there is a high probability that the wheels will get stuck due to the sudden brake force and slide on the road. This happens because the momentum of the velocity of the car carries it, and the wheels are not able to covert that into the rotational movement because of brakes. ABS, or an Anti-Lock Braking System, is a piece of safety equipment that prevents the wheels of a vehicle from locking up under emergency, panic, or harsh braking conditions. EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution): While ABS is the overall automotive braking technology, EBD is just a part of the overall system. However, these elements are equally important in reinforcing the safety department of the vehicles. The EBD is responsible for distributing the braking power to all car wheels. Also helps in regulating and applying the braking force needed to each wheel according to the road condition, vehicle's load, and speed. The EBD ensures how much braking force is needed by each wheel and then applies the same to achieve the most suitable braking impact. Brake Assist (BA): Also known as Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) is another piece of car braking technology. As the name suggests is responsible for assisting the driver in an emergency stop situation. The braking system will work more swiftly when there is sudden braking if it is equipped with the BA feature. This feature aims to ensure that the brakes are applied in case of an emergency if the driver cannot respond quickly enough. This happens often because, in case of sudden braking, the driver cannot press the brake pedal fully. However, an average driver isn’t fast enough for a situation like this, where a millisecond of delay can translate to catastrophe. This is where Braking Assist steps in. Usually, you’ll want to bleed your disc brakes either when air gets into the system or enough time has passed for the oil to become contaminated. | Subscribe to Cycling Weekly here: 🤍 What you’ll need to bleed Shimano disc brakes: 7mm spanner Allen keys Paper towel Small flat-bladed screw driver Shimano Disc brake bleed kit First of all, it’s vital that you get the correct fluid for your brakes, and for Shimano’s stoppers that means mineral oil. Using anything else will damage your internals and eat through seals. The first step to bleeding your Shimano disc brakes is removing your front wheel and pads as mineral oil can contaminate them. Once the pads are out, be sure not to pull the lever or it’ll fire the pistons – insert your pad spacer from the kit to prevent this from happening. Lever bleed You’ll need access to the master cylinder, which means peeling back the hood and then unscrewing the bolt – be sure not to lose the rubber o-ring that comes off with it. Next, get out your bleed cup and screw it into the master cylinder, pull out the plunger and then fill it with mineral oil. Then simply flick the lever and agitate the hose and keep an eye out for any bubbles leaving the system. If you’re happy, simply re-plunge the pot and remove it, then replace the screw for the master cylinder. Full bleed Grab your syringe and fill it with some mineral oil and then expel any air from the syringe. It then attaches to the bleed nipple on the calliper, use the 7mm spanner to to undo it. At the top, remove the master cylinder screw, fit the bleed port and remove the plunger. Open the bleed port and then pass the fluid from the syringe, up through the system and into the pot. Be sure not to use all the fluid, leave a bit in the syringe and then tighten up the nipple using the spanner. Then, up at the lever repeat the lever bleed from earlier. Once done, pop the plunger back in and then re-fit the screw to the master cylinder. Remove the bleed block then re-fit the pads and the pad pin and that should be it. Please dispose of your oil responsibly, don’t just flush it down the loo but take it to the tip!
