Designing a database is an important part of implementing a feature or creating a new application (assuming you need to store data). There are many different ways data can be stored. There are some limitations put in by the database, but there are a lot of different techniques that can still be used. This can mean there are some design concepts that are used that I believe should be avoided. I’ve listed these “database design mistakes” in this video. I’ve explained what they are, why it’s not a good idea to use them, and what the solution should be instead. Some of them you may disagree with, and some of them you may have seen in live production systems that work well. That’s OK. This video explains the reasons why it’s not usually a good idea and what the alternatives are. In this third episode about data integrity, I talk about how to save your data such that computers have an easier time working with it (e.g. for filters), how to ensure that data stays valid by your own rules as you add increasing numbers of validations over the years, about avoiding the mistake of duplicating data across tables and needing to sync these records, about using database transactions to ensure that state changes to multiple rows either all occur or all fail as a unit (preventing invalid intermediate states from cropping up), and lastly about using cascades to ensure the deletion of associated records that should not exist when their 'parent' records are deleted.

Part of our Fuel Friday series, this video shows the process involved in the in-house manufacture of our motorcycle exhaust dB killers and removable baffles. This is for the Fuel Exhaust ranges as well as the Universal silencer options we manufacture to suit a variety of different outlet diameter, aftermarket motorcycle exhaust brands. Making decibel killers is quite a lengthy process. Especially when it is an item that requires 'so much effort to make something everyone really wants to take out' as recently described by one of our customers. There are many processes involved in the manufacture of decibel killers / removable baffles and most are shown in our video blog but for reference the tasks are as follows... Expanding and reducing the stainless tube (for the dB killer baffle head) Cutting and welding two stainless tube sections together using our welding rotator (to achieve the appropriate angle) Punching a hole into the baffle head and inserting the rivnut insert Welding the dB killer / baffle head to the stainless tube Welding the riveted insert nut in place for additional stability Grinding the proud section of the rivnut insert to form a flat surface We also cut the tube to length and the appropriate angle in-house although this is not shown in the video.
