Why all world maps are wrong

Making accurate world maps is mathematically impossible. Follow Johnny on Instagram 🤍instagram.com/johnny.harris/ Help us make more ambitious videos by joining the Vox Video Lab: 🤍 Maps are flat representations of our spherical planet. Johnny Harris cut open a plastic globe to understand just what it takes to turn a sphere into something flat. His struggle to make a flat map out of the plastic globe is indicative of a challenge mapmakers have faced for centuries: It is mathematically impossible to translate the surface of a sphere onto a plane without some form of distortion. To solve this problem, mathematicians and cartographers have developed a huge library of representations of the globe, each distorting a certain attribute and preserving others. For instance, the Mercator projection preserves the shape of countries while distorting the size, especially near the north and south pole. For a more accurate view of land area look at the Gall-Peters projection, which preserves area while distorting shape. In the end, there's not "right" map projection. Each comes with trade-offs, and cartographers make projection decisions based on the particular tasks at hand. But if you are interested in seeing an accurate depiction of the planet, it's best to stick with a globe. How Europe Stole the World

How Europe Dominated the Planet Go to our sponsor 🤍 for 10% off your first month of therapy with BetterHelp and get matched with a therapist who will listen and help. Correction: 01:07 I characterize Europe as a “continent full of poor miserable farmers” and later go on to compare it to the “thriving” empires elsewhere. While it is indeed true that Europe in the 1400s was full of famine, plague, war, and general suffering, it’s inaccurate to say that Europeans were much worse off than people living in any other parts of the world. Especially if you look to Southern Europe where an explosion of art, science, and trade was taking place at this time. The accurate point would be to say that Europe had been relatively cut off from the world since the Ottoman Empire blocked them from historical trade routes. Europe was not deeply connected to global trade, which was mostly happening in the Indian Ocean regions at that time. Correction: 04:50 see the correction from 01:07 Correction: 05:43 As noted earlier, Europeans had trade connections with the east. During this time they were cut off by the Ottoman Empire for the reasons I explain in the video Correction: 07:21 While Portugal had gone out trading and exploring Western Africa first, I present it as if Portugal had made it to Asia before Spain decided to start exploring. This isn’t right. Columbus’ journey west (1492) happened a few years before Portugal’s first voyage that reached India (lead by Vasco da Gama in 1497). Correction: 08:55 This little dramatization mischaracterizes what happened here. As many have pointed it out it feels like I’m asserting that Columbus “invented” imperialism in this moment. And indeed the way this is presented implies that. Columbus did NOT invent the idea of taking over land. In fact, a part of his contract with the royals was that he would take over any land he could while on this journey. The important point here is that Columbus set out to get in on trade in the east, but that the “discovery” of the America’s turned those efforts away from looking for new trade routes, to a full blown imperial project in the Americas. That’s the point I was trying ot make, but missed the mark in this overly dramatized moment. Correction: 16:02 In addition “their weapons” and “their city germs” It would have been more accurate to mention a major tool for the conquerors which was the exploitation of local politics and alliances. The conquest of these huge swaths of land required Europeans to ally with and rely on local expertise and man power to colonize these territories. The secret formula behind Johnny Harris' popular explainer videos. A visual look at how this ex Vox "Borders" video maker structures his journalism, map, & historical stories. Insight into scripting & editing YouTube videos that inspire, retain viewers, & get views. The clips of Johnny Harris explaining his structure come from a much larger talk he gave, I've linked to the region I sampled from here: 🤍 Those ideas were used as a base, but much of the ideas were original, for example, the "experience it, understand it", which my creative editor Michelle Jia helped come up with. It's also important to note: 1. This structure isn't Johnny's creation: he learned it in large part at Vox under the mentorship of folks like Joss Fong. 2. Beyond his structure, Johnny Harris puts weeks of effort into deeply understanding a topic, which enables him to use this story structure so effectively. It's not the structure alone doing all the work :) 3. Johnny has a larger storytelling (paid) course here: 🤍 00:00 the formula behind Johnny's virality 01:40 1. The session was coordinated by Ms Anju Anand and Ms Devika Mittal from Indian side and Mr Usama Palla and Ms Suraya Islam from Pakistan. We're grateful they let us drop by! The British tasked Cyril Radcliffe with the job of drawing a line to separate Punjab and Bengal provinces from India into East and West Pakistan. Muslims and Hindus weren’t the only ones being separated from each other. Sikhs and people from other faiths were affected as well. A Sikh pilgrimage was divided because of the new border, Punjabi people of all faiths were separated from each other, and a culture was ultimately divided. This Vox Borders episode looks at how the Radcliffe line changed Punjab and how communities are affected now. The Golden Age of Misinformation *Some Copy about the Video for the YouTube Algorithm* In this month's video, we're looking at a couple of videos by journalist Johnny Harris (Vox Borders), particularly a recent video by Harris called "How China Became So Powerful", which was produced in partnership with the World Economic Forum (WEF). I use the story of Johnny Harris' partnership with the WEF as a jumping-off point for discussing the growing tide of propaganda and misinformation on social media sites such as YouTube. In particular, I'm interested in using the example of Harris as a means of discussing the various dangers of independent journalism coming into contact with the so-called "influencer economy" and how this might leave such journalism open to distortion by bad actors. Along the way, we also touch upon what the shady activities of the World Economic Forum (organisers of the annual Davos Summit in which Heads of State meet with representatives from some of the richest corporations in the world) and their current initiative the "Great Reset", which has been jumped upon by conspiracy theorists but is actually a vague attempt to rebrand capitalism as being able to solve inequality and the climate emergency (rather than being their cause). We also very briefly touch upon the notions of "shareholder capitalism" and "stakeholder capitalism" which Harris discusses in his "How China Became So Powerful" before considering what Harris' partnership with the World Economic Forum might have in common with attempts by the Chinese Government to spread its own propaganda on this platform. It’s easy to blame the other side. And for many Democrats, it’s obvious that Republicans are thwarting progress toward a more equal society. But what happens when Republicans aren’t standing in the way? In many states — including California, New York and Illinois — Democrats control all the levers of power. They run the government. They write the laws. And as we explore in the video above, they often aren’t living up to their values. In key respects, many blue states are actually doing worse than red states. It is in the blue states where affordable housing is often hardest to find, there are some of the most acute disparities in education funding and economic inequality is increasing most quickly. Instead of asking, “What’s the matter with Kansas?” Democrats need to spend more time pondering, “What’s the matter with California?” Subscribe: 🤍 More from The New York Times Video: 🤍 Whether it's reporting on conflicts abroad and political divisions at home, or covering the latest style trends and scientific developments, New York Times video journalists provide a revealing and unforgettable view of the world.
