What is Load Balancing? ⚖️


Load Balancing is a key concept to system design. One simple way would be hashing all requests and then sending them to the assigned server. The standard way to hash objects is to map them to a search space, and then transfer the load to the mapped computer. A system using this policy is likely to suffer when new nodes are added or removed from it. Some terms you would here in system design interviews are Fault Tolerance, in which case a machine crashes. And Scalability, in which case machines need to be added to process more requests. Another term used often is request allocation. This means assigning a request to a server. Load balancing is often tied with service discovery and global locks. The type of load we want to balance is that of sticky sessions. Looking to ace your next interview? In this video we will explain two types of load balancers, layer 4 and layer 7. Chapters 0:00 Intro 6:00 L4 Load balancer 9:10 L4 Load Balancer Pros and Cons 16:18 Example L4 Load Balancer with HAPROXY 22:30 L7 Load Balancer 27:00 L7 Pros and Cons 31:00 Example L7 Load Balancer with HAPROXY 37:00 Summary Layer 4 (4/3) Take content forwards it based on basic rules, it knows ip and port and perhaps latency of the target service. Layer 4 - haproxy, NLB Pros - great for simple packet-level load balancing - Fast and efficient doesn’t look at the data - More secure as it cant really look at your packets. So if it was compromised no one can look - Uses NAT - One connection between client and server NATed Cons - Cant do smart load balancing based on the content, such as switch request based on requested media type - Cant do microservices with this type - Has to be sticky as it is a stateful protocol (all segments) Layer 7 (Nginx , haproxy) This type of proxy actually looks at the content and have more context, it knows you are visiting the /users resources so it may forward it to a different server. Essential and Great for microservices , it knows the content is video:image etc.. it can also cache.. we cant really do caching on layer 4 because we have no clue whats in the packets. But expensive because it has to decrypt and look and compute Layer 4 - haproxy, nlb - great for simple packet-level load balancing - fast and efficient doesn’t look at the data - More secure as it cant really look at your packets. So id it was compromised no one can look - Uses NAT - One connection between client and server NATed Layer 7 - examples nginx - Smart routing based on the url (microservices) flexible - Provide caching - Expensive need to decrypt - Secuirty, you have to share your certificate with the load balancers. Some of you guys asked this question and I thought its appropriate to make a video. So Personally id like to think of a Load balancer as one of the applications of a reverse proxy. It is a special case of a reverse proxy. Lets us define what a reverse proxy is first. To define load balancer we need to first define what a reverse proxy is. And to define reverse proxy, we need to know what a proxy is! So lets start with a proxy A proxy is a piece of software that makes request to a server in place of the client. Servers don’t know who are the client. Reverse proxy is the reverse! The client doesn’t know which server it is connected to. I recommend checking out the video of proxy vs reverse proxy to learn more. A Load balancer is a special case of a reverse proxy. Reverse proxy doesn’t have to be a load balancer. Load balancers must have two or more servers on the backend to balance the load, reverse proxy doesn’t have to. Reverse proxy can be optimized to perform the following: 1. Caching web acceleration 2. Azure Load Balancer operates at layer four of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. It's the single point of contact for clients. Load Balancer distributes inbound flows that arrive at the load balancer's front end to backend pool instances. These flows are according to configured load balancing rules and health probes. The backend pool instances can be Azure Virtual Machines or instances in a virtual machine scale set. A public load balancer can provide outbound connections for virtual machines (VMs) inside your virtual network. These connections are accomplished by translating their private IP addresses to public IP addresses. Public Load Balancers are used to load balance internet traffic to your VMs. An internal (or private) load balancer is used where private IPs are needed at the frontend only. Internal load balancers are used to load balance traffic inside a virtual network. A load balancer frontend can be accessed from an on-premises network in a hybrid scenario. Why use Azure Load Balancer? With Standard Load Balancer, you can scale your applications and create highly available services. Load balancer supports both inbound and outbound scenarios. Load balancer provides low latency and high throughput, and scales up to millions of flows for all TCP and UDP applications. Key scenarios that you can accomplish using Standard Load Balancer include: Load balance internal and external traffic to Azure virtual machines. Increase availability by distributing resources within and across zones. Configure outbound connectivity for Azure virtual machines. Use health probes to monitor load-balanced resources. Employ port forwarding to access virtual machines in a virtual network by public IP address and port. Enable support for load-balancing of IPv6. Standard Load Balancer provides multi-dimensional metrics through Azure Monitor. These metrics can be filtered, grouped, and broken out for a given dimension. They provide current and historic insights into performance and health of your service. Resource Health is also supported. Review Standard Load Balancer Diagnostics for more details. Load balance services on multiple ports, multiple IP addresses, or both. Move internal and external load balancer resources across Azure regions. Load balance TCP and UDP flow on all ports simultaneously using HA ports. Secure by default Standard Load Balancer is built on the zero trust network security model at its core. Standard Load Balancer secure by default and is part of your virtual network. The virtual network is a private and isolated network. This means Standard Load Balancers and Standard Public IP addresses are closed to inbound flows unless opened by Network Security Groups. NSGs are used to explicitly permit allowed traffic.
