In which I snarkily assess an incredibly expensive camcorder of yore. I'll admit I might have been a bit harsh on it, but even if it's better than I give it credit for, I still think JVC's motives here were not what they should have been. Reuploaded with 40% less "unblurred Kennedy assassination"! Whoops on that first go-round. Special note! I bought a new camera and I am very much still getting used to it. It took me three days to color grade this into something resembling consistency, and it's still all over the place. I'll get better in the future, especially with new glass - I shot this on a Canon kit lens and an adapted off-brand F-mount that I just, you know, had around. MiniDV is a Digital Video mini format cassette tape system launched in 1995. It was developed alongside FireWire, the IEEE1394 standard link also known as iLink. FireWire was great for attaching data backup devices. Janus Cycle had 10Gb of video data in need of a backup. Music: Dead Can Dance - The Host of Seraphim (in concert 2013) farbrausch - fr-08 loading
VERY IMPORTANT if your camera has a firewire port (google it) I HIGHLY recommend looking up a guide for using that instead, this is an old video. The reason is that you get the FULL ORIGINAL quality, and it will automatically split the recordings. Please, only do this as a last resort, the quality is that much better!! Preserve your memories properly, and make sure you make backups too! I will make a follow-up video when I am able to get another adapter again as that is how I ended up doing the conversion myself, using a PCI to firewire card. If you're interested, let me know. Turn old MiniDV/VHS into digital or record your retro games as an MP4 file for the cheap using macOS. In 1993 I began recording inline skating on a malfunctioning VHS-C camera that captured video with a blue tint and then edited the footage together with two VCRs to create very rough sections. That is why the first skate video I made with VCRs was called No Budget, Lo-Fi. The following year I purchased a Hi-8 camera and invested in video editing hardware and software for my computer. This equipment brought me into a new world of production and gave my videos a professional appearance. In 1997 I transitioned away from the High-8 format and began recording with a MiniDV camera. I traveled the world to document inline skating until 2009, producing nearly a dozen videos during that time using the MiniDV format. After 12 years of recording, I accumulated a sizeable collection of MiniDV tapes. External hard drives were expensive and did not have enough storage space to archive even a fraction of my collection. Regrettably, to save money, I recorded over a quarter of my tapes, erasing irreplaceable skating history. When New Technology Conflicts With Old Technology Today, external hard drives are affordable and have more than enough storage capacity to archive all of the tapes I have. While organizing my office a couple of months back, I came across boxes of MiniDV tapes. I've been moving these tapes around for almost two decades from city to city and shelf to shelf. It was at that moment I decided it was time to transfer them to my Macbook Pro and then archive them onto an external hard drive. The dilemma I immediately faced was, how do I capture footage from a MiniDV Camera with a FireWire 4-pin port to a Macbook Pro with only Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports. In the past, all my hardware was either FireWire 800 or FireWire 400 compatible, which made capturing footage a breeze. Now I was at a loss of how to make it work, so I reached out to some friends for suggestions. One friend told me to buy a USB-C hub with a FireWire 800 port that cost several hundred dollars, while another friend recommended I send my tapes to a company that would digitize them for over $20 each. Neither one of these options was affordable or appealing to me. My goal was to find a way to capture my tapes without spending too much money. Is This Even Going to be Possible? After much research, I figured out what I needed to do to capture MiniDV footage onto my MacBook Pro. The only way to make this work, without spending an arm and a leg, was to buy multiple adapters made by Apple and piecing them together to connect the camera to the computer. Further down, I've posted links to purchase all the adapters and cables you need to make this work. Repairing a Mini DV tape is actually not very difficult at all, once you have the right tools. In many ways, it’s very similar to the VHS tape repair and audio tape repair. Although tapes can become damaged in many different ways, tape breaking is one of the most common types of damage to these miniDV tapes. In this video, I will show how to repair a Mini DV cassette with a damaged or split tape. 1. First, you will need a 1.4mm Phillips Head screwdriver 2. Unscrew the 4 nails in a counterclockwise motion 3. Carefully remove the bottom cover by gently pulling it up 4. Open the inner flap and remove the spools by pulling it up 5. Inspect your film and find the section where it's damaged 6. Use scissors to cut the damaged section 7. Remove the damaged film by cutting it in an angle 8. Get a small piece of tape and connect the 2 ends together 9. You do not have to tape both sides, less friction is better 10. Make sure the tape is not sticking out 11. Scroll the stools so that the tape gets hidden Now lets reassemble everything back together 12. Make sure the card chip is positioned in the slot of the case 13. Make sure the plastic cylinder is positioned in the center of the case 14. Finally make sure the slider is positioned in the slot of the case 15. Reassemble the stools back into the case 16. Make sure the transparent side of the stool is facing upwards 17. Gently put the stools back in its position 18. Rotate the stools to tighten the film 19. Use your pointer finger to pull the inner flap upwards 20. Now with your fingers, pull the entire flap upwards 21. Carefully reassemble the case together 22. You can release your fingers once the case is reassembled 23. Make sure you can see the film through the case 24. Check to see if the film is not damaged 25. You can screw the 4 nails back together in a clockwise motion Congratulations, you've just restored your mini DV film!
The long awaited and highly sought after explanation is finally here. This is a one-off tutorial video for how to capture MiniDV videos from an old camcorder to a PC. In this tutorial I explain how you can transfer old homevideos to PC for much cheaper than sending your tapes to a vendor, or using an inferior USB capture device. I will go over and link to the hardware and software required, why I choose certain file types, and my workflow. One aspect I did not mention in the videokeep your camcorder plugged into its AC charger to prevent the battery from dying during longer captures. A note on file types and conversion: AVI has a superior quality to WMV; it's drawback is that it uses a large amount of storage. Because of this, we will convert from AVI to the modern standard MP4 format, which uses approximately 1% of the storage AVI doesthink 100:1 (AVI:MP4). Hardware you will need: A camcorder equipped with a firewire port A firewire cable A PC equipped with a firewire port (about $31 USD, purchase here 🤍 or here 🤍 the linked expansion card will require a vacant PCIe slot on your PC's motherboard Software you will need (FREE): STOIK Capturer 🤍 Shotcut 🤍 Legacy drivers to get firewire to work with Windows 10 🤍 Monitor screen capture software used to make this video (also FREE): OBS Studio 🤍 Thanks for watching. Is it possible to make MiniDV digital video tapes look more like vintage film? That’s what I attempted to do with my Panasonic PV GS150.
How to Transfer MiniDV Tapes to Computer without Firewire Back in the day, MiniDV was a superior camcorder format. It offered you 500 lines of horizontal resolution. Before MiniDV, SVHS and Hi8 had the highest resolution - 400 lines. VHS and Video8 could manage only 240 lines. MiniDV could send video to a computer without quality loss through a Firewire connection. Your computer must have a Firewire port. Only certain computers like Macs came with Firewire ports. It's not easy to set up a Firewire connection on a computer, especially a laptop computer. Many users have complained about the difficulty of getting Firewire to work on a modern computer. On a modern desktop computer, you may need to install a Firewire 1394 legacy driver to make Firewire work. If you don't want to go through all this hassle, get a USB capture device. These devices are affordable and do a good job of transferring video tapes to digital. All you have to do is connect your camcorder AV out ports to the USB capture device's AV in ports. Once that is done, you can plug in the device to a spare USB port on your computer. Next, you would need a video capture software program to recognize the capture device. The software program is usually included with the purchase of the USB video capture device. After the software detects the device, play the tape on the camcorder You should see a preview on the software's video screen. When you stop recording the captured video will be stored as a file, usually in the MP4 format. You can then edit the file with a video editor and even burn it to DVD. Transferring video through a USB video capture device is not the best way to digitize a miniDV tape. There will be some quality loss. However, it's a much easier process if you're a beginner. For higher quality video you're advised to connect your camcorder to the S-Video port of the capture device instead of the composite video ports. These are the steps you need to follow to transfer MiniDV tapes to a computer without Firewire. Check your video capture device manual for detailed instructions on how to transfer MiniDV tapes to a computer without Firewire.
