AMAZING HOME REPAIR TRICKS YOU’LL LOVE We’re getting crafty today and I’m showing you some brilliant ways to fix everything around you. You don’t need many tools, sometimes you just need things from your kitchen cupboard. If there’s a hole in your wall, you can fill it with a plastic bag, and then add some silicone on top. Using a palette knife even it out so that it looks flat on the wall. And finally, paint it the same color as your wall. To avoid ruining your paint tray, cover it with a plastic bag or some cling film use it, and then discard it. This way it will always be good as new. You can also fix breaks in your bathroom ceramics using noodles and some glue. Then, let it soak flatten it out and make it smooth, paint on top of it with some spray paint and voila. You can also fix some breaks in wooden furniture using rice and glue. Get rid of the excess and buff it out with a sanding block. Watch until the end to see how to fix a burn on a wooden floor. Ask This Old House mason Mark McCullough travels to San Diego to repair a crack in a concrete retaining wall with a stucco finish. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: 🤍 Time: 2-3 hours Cost: $50 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Repairing a Cracked Stucco Wall: Shovel Cold chisel Hammer Bucket Margin trowel Finishing trowel Tuck pointer Masonry brush Shopping List: Type S mortar Steps: 1. Start by making sure the entire crack is fully exposed. This may require digging out the back side of the retaining wall with a shovel. 2. Once the full crack is exposed, take a chisel and a hammer and remove concrete on both sides of the crack until you have one continuous gap in the wall. This will make it easier to slide the mortar in. The gap should be about 1-2”. 3. Clean out the enlarged crack with a hose or a bucket of water. 4. Mix the mortar in a bucket with a margin trowel. Add a little more water than usual to allow the mortar to flow more easily into the crack. 5. Scoop up the mortar with the margin trowel and pour it slowly into the crack. Use the tuck pointer to push it firmly into place. It helps to hold a finishing trowel against the back side of the crack to keep it from pouring out. Leave about _” on the front side of the wall to leave room for the stucco pattern. 6. Allow the mortar to dry for about 1 hour. 7. Mix a new batch of mortar at the normal consistency. 8. Apply the new mortar to the front of the crack using the margin trowel until it is flush with the rest of the wall. 9. Allow the mortar to dry for about 5 minutes. 10. Using the tuck pointer, the masonry brush, and your fingers, carve out small chunks of the mortar to mimic the texture of the stucco pattern. Dampen the brush and expose some of the sand in the mortar. Do this until the texture of the patch matches the texture of the rest of the wall. 11. Allow the mortar to dry and cure for about 3-4 weeks. 12. Once the mortar has cured, apply a masonry stain to it until it matches the rest of the wall. Resources: Mark points out that if a retaining wall is cracked or damaged, the best way to remedy the situation is to identify what caused the crack in the first place and eliminate that cause. However, in many cases, that type of solution won’t be practical for a retaining wall. To simply alleviate the symptoms, the materials required to repair a concrete retaining wall, including the trowel, masonry brush, and mortar are fairly straightforward and easy to locate at home centers. The masonry stain can also be found at home centers. If you bring a chip of the retaining wall with you to the home center, they should be able to closely color match the stain. After explaining to Kevin that his paint job is only as good as the prep work, the two discuss where cracks are most likely to occur before diving into a few repairs. Time: 4 hours Cost: Under $30 Skill: ⅖ Materials: Fiberglass mesh drywall tape [🤍 Joint compound [🤍 Flexible patching compound [🤍 Tack cloth [🤍 Tools: Utility knife [🤍 Putty knife [🤍 Sandpaper [🤍 Steps for repairing plaster walls 1. Start the project by cleaning up the crack with the utility knife. Look for compound, paint flakes, and other debris in the crack and scrape it out. 2. Using the putty knife, apply a thin coat of joint compound to the crack. Start at the top of the crack and drag the compound down, pushing it into the crack as you go. Remove the excess compound by pulling the blade of the knife across the crack at an angle (not perpendicular to the crack). 3. Apply mesh tape over the fresh compound. Starting at the top, lightly press the mesh tape into the bed of compound before using the putty knife to cut it at the bottom. 4. Immediately apply a second coat of compound over the top of the mesh tape. Starting at the top of the tape, apply the compound and remove the excess. Wait 45 minutes to an hour so it can dry. 5. Lightly sand the repair area to remove any high spots and ridges while also feathering the edges of the repair. Use the tack cloth to remove the dust. If the repair or crack is still visible, apply a third coat and feather the edges with sandpaper once dry. Patching Cracked Plaster: Small cracks You can handle some small cracks with a two-coat process using a flexible patching compound, and there isn’t any sanding required. 1. Ensure that the crack is free of debris by scraping the putty knife over the crack. 2. Apply the flexible patching compound to the crack. Start at the top and work your way down, pushing the compound into the crack. 3. It’s important to remove the excess patching compound as it’s not sandable. Drag the blade of the putty knife across the crack at an angle (again, not perpendicular). Ensure that there aren’t any high spots or mounds left behind before allowing the compound to dry for at least two hours. 4. Once dry, apply a second coat of the flexible patching compound in the same manner as the first coat. Again, be sure that there aren’t any high spots or ridges left behind. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED - Lumber ( to measure) - Prybar - Tape Measure - Electric Nailer - Circular Saw - Nails STEPS FOR REPLACING FASCIA BOARD 1. Loosen any attached gutters. Be sure to check condition of the drip edge and status of the gutter. Excessive water buildup or water that doesn’t drain properly can lead to wood damage and rot. 2. Use pry bar to loosen and detach damaged fascia board. This step is usually an easy one, rotted wood “lets go” easily. 3. Use old board to help measure replacement board. You can use a tape measure to determine the length of your replacement board. When you prepare to make your cuts it can be handy to place the old board next to the pre-cut board for ease in .assuring a matched fit. 4. Cut new board. Mark you cuts lines. Use 45 degree angle cut to ensure proper fit when reattaching the replacement board. 5. Fit new board into place and nail securely. This step may be easier with an extra hand depending on the length of the board. 6. Prime new board if desired. To help prevent mildew you can prime the bare wood with a mildew resistant primer. You may prefer to eliminate this step and add a mildewcide to the paint instead. 7. Apply new paint. Apply one or two coats of a quality latex house paint. Check the label to see if it includes a mildewcide, if not you can buy it and add the preventative to the paint before application. MILDEW ON EXTERIOR WOOD • Often forms on areas that tend to be damp and receive little or no direct sunlight ( walls with a northerly exposure and the underside of eaves are particularly vulnerable) • Mildew has roots. Like any plant this fungus has to be eradicated from the root. Unless the mildew is removed to the root, it will grow back. • Mildew that is painted over will grow back through the paint,. You must first totally remove the mildew, apply paint that contains a sufficient level of mildewcide. You can also apply a midew proof primer prior to painting. AL CARRELL’S MAGIC MILDEW REMOVAL FORMULA 3 quarts of warm water 1 quart of liquid bleach ¾ cup of powdered laundry detergent ¼ cup TSP (tri-sodium phosphate, can be easily obtained from paint stores) Mix thoroughly and apply to mildew with a scrub brush or stiff broom. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and eye protection…this formula works, but it is caustic. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: 🤍 Tom helped a pair of homeowners repair part of an oak floor damaged by a leaking steam radiator. With the radiator removed, Tom removed several damaged pieces of flooring using a hammer, chisel, and prybar. Next, he cut several new pieces of strip flooring to fit and installed them using glue and nails. Finally, Tom added a coat of amber-colored shellac to help make the new flooring look like the old flooring surrounding it.
