I've for a long a long time suggested Manjaro Linux if you want to use Arch but don't want to deal with the out of box Arch Linux experience but they've made so many bad decisions I can no longer do so, just use a GUI Arch installer, Endeavour OS, Garuda or another Arch based distro that uses the Arch repos. Manjaro has let their certificates expire 4 times now. It might seem like a very small issue, but it's extremely basic. Renewing certificates is extremely easy, and can be automated. Manjaro's inability to anticipate this or automate it isn't a good sign in terms of how seriously they take their security. Manjaro also has the habit of trying to release things that aren't ready, without checking with the upstream devs first. One example is with the Asahi Linux project, where Manjaro decided that having Apple Silicon support early would be cool, and shipped a broken kernel. 🤍 🤍 This is what led to the "don't ship it" manifesto from various developers, and probably what led the Bottles developer to also ask distros to not repackage their software without talking to them first. 🤍 🤍 Another problem that arose was the use of the AUR in Manjaro. Except the AUR doesn't really work well on Manjaro. Because the AUR assumes you're using the latest Arch software, with the latest versions Arch releases. Which Manjaro doesn't, because they hold back packages for testing. Which means that installing stuff from the AUR can seriously break your Manjaro system if you're not careful. Manjaro's AUR helper had a bug in it, that sent thousands of requests to the AUR's servers for each Manjaro user. This resulted in an involuntary DDOS attack, short for distributed denial of service 🤍 🤍 And then there are a few other issues. The project lead wanted to buy a new laptop using Manjaro funds, for about 2000€. The treasurer refused the expense, because it went against Manjaro's policy. This led to an argument with the project lead, and surfaced other expenses that hadn't been discussed according to Manjaro's Policy, and led the treasurer to leave the company, leaving the project lead in full control of all the community funds. 🤍 Then Manjaro announced that they would be shipping SoftMaker office by default instead of LibreOffice. Replacing an open source component with a proprietary one isn't really something you'd expect from a Linux distribution. 🤍 Manjaro has also often been accused of not contributing to upstream, especially on the mobile front. Someone involved in the Pine64 community points out that the fact that most mobile Pine64 projects are starting to falter is due to the fact that only Manjaro is a supported distribution for the Pinephone, where before there were a myriad of community editions, and that Manjaro doesn't really contribute to supporting the hardware. 🤍

Didn't you get baffled, why there are so many Linux distros out there? Out of many, Manjaro and Ubuntu are one of the most well-liked Linux distributions which are made for beginners. These distros give a niche experience to an end-user. In this video, we gonna see what are the differences between Manjaro and Ubuntu 22.04 . Three Reasons Why Manjaro Is the Best Linux Distribution for New Users of Linux In 2022

862

00:09:36
17.11.2022

In this video, I cover three reasons why I believe that Manjaro is the best Linux distribution for new users of Linux. Reason One – Installation and Package Management. Users of Windows have become accustomed to installing software from websites, or more recently, through the Microsoft Store and Winget. In Linux, things are bit different, as most of the software you will install will be coming from the distribution’s repository. All Linux distributions work this way, so why is Manjaro better at this. Firstly, it has a 100% graphical tool called Pacmac or Add / Remove Software that allows you to search and install any available software. Simply click on what you want to install, confirm a prompt using your password, and then the software will be installed. You can also update your entire system in the same manner, in fact by default, you will receive updates to your system, every four weeks, but unlike Windows, this is not compulsory, and you can choose to update at your leisure. You can also easily update Linux kernels, as Manjaro includes Kernels, a GUI tool that allows you to add and remove different Linux kernels from your system. In Linux, 99% of cases, drivers are included as part of the Linux kernel, so if you plug a device in, it will work out of the box, but there are some exceptions, for example Nvidia drivers. Manjaro has a utility that handles driver installation called Hardware Configuration, a GUI tool with a single click installation button that will download and install the latest Nvidia driver for you. Finally, since you are likely using Pamac to install your software, you can also use it to install software from third party repositories such as Flathub (Flatpak) or the Arch User Repository (AUR) with a single toggle. Reason Two – Stability & Testing. Manjaro operates on a system of three repositories or branches, unstable, testing, and stable. New packages and software start their lives in unstable, where members of the community check for bugs or regressions that may have happened within software version changes, and usually if there is a bug at this stage it is squashed. The next stage is testing, which is the second line of defence, and since there is a larger number of users that use this branch, more feedback is provided to the Manjaro developers to minimise any bugs slipping through the net. Finally, the last and default branch is stable, which in theory at this point, you can safely update your system in the knowledge that it should be safe to do so. The entire process between the unstable and stable branches is usually a couple of weeks, however there are some exceptions, the main ones are security patches, which are often fast tracked. As a added precaution, before any system update, Manjaro will take a Timeshift backup, so that if the worst-case scenario happens, you can revert to the point before the update. Reason Three – Popularity. Much like Ubuntu, the installation base of Manjaro is quite large, and it is based on another popular Linux distribution, Arch Linux, however this is where the similarity ends. This means that if you encounter a problem, or just simply want to know how to do something, chances are if you Google or DuckDuckGo the issue with Manjaro or Arch at the end of the query, you will get a valid answer. Of course, you can ask in the official Manjaro forums, or the unofficial subreddit for some help, assuming you want a solution and are not just asking someone else to do the job for you. Plus, since Manjaro is based upon Arch, you also have access to the best Linux documentation available on the Internet, the Arch wiki which covers all aspects of the Linux operating system. There is also the Manjaro wiki, which aims to covers the Manjaro specific topics not covered in the Arch wiki, although the former is not as populated. #manjaro #linux #userexperience

Be Careful With The AUR On Manjaro Linux

The AUR being the Arch User Repository is designed for use around Arch Linux and when you use it on anything else even something Arch based you may face depending on the configuration of that distros repos. It single-handedly turned the Linux desktop from something that was only usable by really knowledgeable people, into something that was really accessible to the masses, even then. Then in short succession, they dropped Unity, version 7 for the desktop, and version 8 which was meant to be the successor, that brought convergence between device type, they dropped Mir, their display server that was meant to replace X.org and be an alternative to Wayland, and they basically settled for GNOME 3. Ubuntu has a desktop problem. Since it basically abandoned the leadership of the desktop to the community, it also doesn't seem to anticipate things very much. Which means that the extensions they apply to GNOME pull them backwards. Waiting 6 months to get what everyone else has sucks, and you get a Frankenbuntu mishmash of versions of apps and libraries, that can't really be as stable as having the whole lot on the same version number. Ubuntu also has fixed repo versions for apps, desktop environments, and libraries. Only security fixes come through, apart from a few apps, like web browsers. This means that this frankenbuntu is locked in place. If you use 22.04 LTS, you're never getting the full GNOME 42 in your repos. Ubuntu also has an apps problem. Ubuntu pushes Snaps, their own containerized solution. On the desktop, Snaps have issues. These issues were shared in the past by other similar formats, like Flatpak, or Appimages. But nowadays, it's really, really late to the party. It doesn't support dark mode integration. It doesn't integrate with themes. it doesn't offer a way to solve these issues, contrary to Flatpak and the Flatseal app for example. Because it uses fixed repos, without feature updates, it needs a way to bring application updates to the desktop, and this way, is supposedly Snaps. The issue is, the snap store doesn't seem to have as many desktop apps as Flathub has, and snap as a solution is getting increasingly outdated, slow to launch, and less well integrated than Flatpak. It's also being aggressively pushed to Ubuntu users, and this impacts downstream distros, for example, Canonical decided to only ship Chromium as a Snap, which meant that other distros, like Linux Mint, had to take on the burden of packaging and maintaining it themselves if they didn't want to adopt the snap version. Ubuntu is still very easy to use. But its crown in terms of "the easiest distro for beginners" is long gone. Nowadays, plenty of options are better than Ubuntu for complete Linux beginners. Linux Mint has a relentless drive to keep working on what made Ubuntu great in the first place: everything must have a GUI to configure it. Zorin OS does as well, even though its GNOME implementation is also a frankenbuntu, or frankenzorin or whatever. These 2 options alone are, in my opinion, much better for beginners than Ubuntu. They have more quality of life features, like built in accent colors, more configuration tools, and they support more software, plus all the software made for Ubuntu.

Ex-Google TheTechLead takes you and his mechanized dog Sunny on a walk to answer your #1 question. But the answer to Life is not so simple as "Linux." Don't get me wrong Linux is my choice for web & database backend servers. But, don't confuse a backend for a frontend unless the only thing you care about are backends. The funny thing is, as soon as you tell me (and quite proudly, I might add) that you primarily run Linux, I already know a ton about you. I know that you have no artistic ability that you're not into full-stack or front-end dev (no photoshop), you're not a photographer (no lightroom), and you're not into video editing (no premiere). I know you're not a software entrepreneur, as you would have needed full-stack development for that. I know you're not into remote collaboration with Google Drive (and Dropbox support is being ended soon). I know you're not an iOS developer (no XCode), or mobile developer at all (which generally requires Photoshop). I know you haven't honed your UX/product sense. Even if you dual-boot, I know you're in pain and will probably lose a bunch of data one day and have no idea what happened. You see that? I applied a bunch of tweaks to it, from using Latte Dock to achieve a look and feel I liked, to changing the widget theme, the position of window controls, making windows appear centered, and other small tweaks here and there. If you want to achieve a similar look, you can follow a video from linux Scoop, I left a link in the description below. I didn't apply everything he did there, I mainly took the Latte Dock and plasma themes. Now that this is out of the way, let's begin with what I liked about KDE Plasma. 🤍 ## What I liked Apart from completely changing the layout, the number of small things you can change is just amazing: from how the task manager looks and behaves, to which notification icons you want to see and when, or the clock style, you can really change everything you want. I also enjoy the widget system, that you can add to your desktop. I added my Video folder, and a few system monitoring ones,, but that's just the tip of the iceberg here. There are hundreds of widgets you can download from the Plasma, let's call it "store" for lack of a better word. It was nice to rediscover notification icons, especially how they've been integrated in plasma. They all feel part of the same interface, which is rare. Usually, you get a disjointed collection of icons of varying shapes, sizes and colors, but here, they're all looking nice and similar, and I must admit I had missed them quite a lot on elementary OS. Having a full-featured menu is also very refreshing. It's not just a list of apps, or categories, you also get access to your favorite folders, your recent files history, and, more importantly, it has file search. Another thing that I missed, is KDE Connect. I used it on elementary OS, but there is no way to really integrate it, especially since the elementary OS notification system doesn't really support actionable notifications, so there was no way to answer messages, or share files, so it was a glorified remote control. ## What I don't like Of course, not everything is roses and rainbows. There are things that I don't really like about KDE as a desktop environment. The default theme, in light mode, is pretty bland and looks a bit old, especially the buttons. I'm using the daark theme which kinda resolves the issue, but the default applications theme really needs an update, in my opinion. My main issue here is with applications. The default suite of applications in KDE is very inconsistent. On the one hand, you have apps that have really simple defaults, and a lot of power under the hood if you need it, like Dolphin. On the other hand, you have applications that really want you to see every single feature, panel, and option available, right out of the box, like the Calendar. There also seem to be a less sizable community developing KDE apps as on GNOME or elementary OS. A lot of the apps are pretty old, and look it, like Korganizer, or Kmail. I couldn't find a todo list application along the lines of Getting Things GNOME or Planner. I couldn't find an equivalent to Audacity for the KDE desktop. Of course, you can always install non-KDE apps on KDE, and that's what I did, with the GIMP, Planner, or Audacity. And that's where KDE grabs the advantage again: it integrates GTK apps a lot better than GNOME integrates Qt apps. The fact that you can choose any theme you want for GTK apps under KDE is great, because it means these things will look a lot better integrated, and not feel so alien. Using KDE apps on GNOME or Elementary OS is a weird experience, as they really don't look or feel native, but GTK apps on KDE feel just at home. Now I praised the avalanche of settings before, and I'm not going to apologize for it, but it's also a bit of a hassle sometimes to find a specific thing you're looking for.

Think XFCE looks bad? Think again! - XFCE Customization

Use awesome Linux servers and get a 100$ credit on your new Linode account: 🤍 For as long as I've used Linux, I've heard, and thought, that XFCE was a "bad looking desktop". While my first contact with it didn't really change my mind, it's time to take a look at how to change its look and feel, and hopefully get rid of that preconceived notion. We'll start with a few examples of changes applied to XFCE by some distros, and then we'll try to build our own look and feel. Become a channel member to get access to a weekly patroncast and vote on the next topics I'll cover: 🤍 Support the channel on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 The Linux Experiment merch: get your goodies there! 🤍 Ok, so let's start with something that's really close to the default: Xubuntu. Xubuntu doesn't change much from the default XFCE layout: they keep the top bar mostly intact, and they remove the bottom panel with its quick launchers. They swapped out the default XFCE Menu for something people have been recommending quite a lot: the Whisker menu. When you right click it, you get access to a LOT of options to really make it your own: you can display apps as icons instead of lists, elect to show the "generic app names". On top of that, the whisker menu lets you change where the category list is displayed, where the search field goes, and a lot more. Apart from that, Xubuntu doesn't change much: the default theme is Greybird, and the default icons are the elementary XFCE ones. For a good close to vanilla XFCE experience Xubuntu seems perfect, but that's not what we're looking for here. Let's move on to Linux Mint. Mint tweaks their XFCE implementation to look and feel exactly like Cinnamon, their main desktop, and it's quite nice. They basically move the top panel to the bottom, in a more windows-like layout, and they also use the whisker menu, which apparently you can resize. Mint also got rid of that second panel that default XFCE ships, to integrate its features in the main one, namely the quick launchers. The rest of the layout is pretty much bog standard, with the window list, and the system tray applets. In terms of look and feel, Mint brings its own green appearance, with the Mint-Y, or Minty GTK theme and icons, and going over to the Ubuntu fonts instead of the Noto family. Still, that's a simple customization effort, it's basically a new theme for everything, and flipping the top panel to the bottom. We can go further than that. ## Pick and choose This is Enso OS, and honestly, if you had told me it was based on XFCE, I just wouldn't have believed you initially. The layout is nice: you have a dock, and a top panel with a global menu. On top of that, you get the regular system tray applets, but with a better calendar than the default. The bottom panel isn't an XFCE panel at all, it's the Plank dock, aligned to the left of the screen. It hosts an application launcher that looks pretty cool and can be invoked with the "super" key, a "multitasking" icon that opens the multitasking view that elementary OS users will be familiar with, and there are also some quick launch shortcuts. Speaking of elementary OS, Enso OS uses their window manager, which means that you also get animations when minimizing, maximizing, and tiling windows. It looks pretty good. Enso OS also changes the theme for their own, the icons using the "Paper" theme, and uses the Ubuntu fonts, and the Breeze cursor theme that KDE Plasma created. ## My own results So, I moved the panel to the left. I added Whisker menu, and configured it to be pretty much just an applications list: I only use the menu as a search engine, and as such I don't need fancy icons or categories, just a nice list of apps. Then it's a separator in expanded mode, and pretty much the standard notification applets, clock, and logout menu. On the bottom left, I used Plank, the dock elementary OS uses, because it's fast, it's super simple, and it handles window management. I decided to go without a border around icons, and to group everything on the left, to make mouse operations easier. The theme I used is called Qogir, for the GTK theme, the window borders and the icons, I think it looks quite good, and I already use it as a backup theme for GTK apps on my KDE desktop. I moved all window buttons to the left, except for the maximize one, because I like trying new stuff out, and I changed the font to Inter, because it's a lot more professional looking than Noto in my opinion.

If you ever wanted to use Manjaro Linux with the beautiful and futuristic Deepin Desktop Environment, the Manjaro Deepin Edition will let you do just that without the hustle of installing the Deepin Desktop from the repositories on top of a barebone Manjaro Linux installation. Developed as part of the recently released Manjaro 20.1 “Mikah” series, the Deepin Edition promises an out-of-the-box Deepin Desktop experience powered by all the goodies that the Arch Linux and Manjaro Linux distributions have to offer. While still in early development, the Deepin Edition of Manjaro Linux works great and I think it will be a very popular release when it hits the streets later this year. If you never experienced the Deepin Desktop before, let me tell you that you’ll fall in love with it immediately. From the dual application launcher with a GNOME-style app drawer by default and an optional and classic, KDE-like app launcher, and continuing with the stylish file manager and control center, the Deepin Desktop Environment looks and feels really nice on top of a Manjaro Linux base.
